The Sirince 4 Guide Butoh Intensive is made up of 4 guides coming from four different countries: Santeri Vikström (Finland), Alessia Mallardo (Italy), Coco Villarreal (Mexico), and Adam Koan (USA).

Together we will guide a 5 week intensive composed of 5 hours of training per day, Monday to Friday. The focus will be butoh approached via various avenues such as Noguchi taiso. We will break though boundaries of human domestication in order to both feel and create in a more in-depth way.

Santeri guides a unique and potent way to increase mental fluidity in order to explore and deepen ones butoh, movement, ritual and psyche. Alessia works via Noguchi taiso and somatics. Coco takes us to the edge, brings us back to our inner nature, and creates an atmosphere of deep listening. Adam combines physical, intellectual and shamanic methods to bring us into our personal butoh body. Part of the emphasis of this program is for both guide and participant to harmonize these guiding approaches into one.

Santeri Vikström

Santeri Vikström is a butoh-based artist and curious wonderer based in Helsinki, Finland. His background is in butoh, various wisdom traditions and improvisational theatre. His work is related to butoh and builds an ability to open the space where flow, alternative stages of consciousness, and creativity are generated and where mindfulness and trance states meet in so-called “lucid trance”.
He has studied butoh all around world for almost a decade and he has presented butoh performances and workshops in places such as Finland, Germany, India, Serbia, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Australia, Hungary, Denmark and so on.

Bridging between butoh, mystery and creativity.

In this workshop series, we will enter a unique and potent way to increase mental fluidity to explore and deepen each ones butoh, movement, ritual and psyche. We are in the search of kind of optimal grip which will allow us to dance the unseen and moisten each ones unique approach. Workshop includes a clear account of how to relate to mystery and how to embody it, what we can do to improve the contact with flow in butoh, arts and life in general and how to come more into in a lucid stage to improve the creativity and embodiment. The workshop series is suitable for anyone and no previous butoh or dance practice is needed.

Alessia Mallardo (Medusa)

Alessia Mallardo (Medusa), dancer and dance therapist, psychologist and researcher of conscious and unconscious processes: dreams, trance, rituals of possession. She has always been interested in exploring that borderline territory between light and shadow. She practices dance both as an art form and as a tool in the service of social services. Among the many teachings she has received, Butoh is her favourite instrument, which she has been learning and practising since she began following Atsushi Takenouchi; she learns Noguchi Taiso from Imre Thormann, as the preparatory and complementary gymnastics to movement.

Starting with elements of Noguchi Taiso, we create sensory maps, sensitive geographies, visible and invisible. we explore the senses of hearing, touch, vision, taste, smell and how the somatic reactions of the body come together in movement. Let’s take touch, for example, starting with the dynamics of movement and focusing on the support of the body on the ground. An experience is born that is dynamically translated into form, therefore into images to which we leave the drive to go elsewhere. A dialogue with the space outside, an open door to the space inside. The observation, the construction, the discovery of unthinkable spaces that can find shape through dance.

Adam Koan

Adam is a half Colombian half Venezuelan-American, raised in the small town of Belleview, Florida who has toured the world performing, teaching, and writing about Butoh. He has taught butoh at Tiyatro Medresesi on three separate retreat programs during winter of 2021. He is a former facilitator at Himalaya Subbody Butoh and was curator for the 2-week Serbia Butoh Retreat 2019. In his early dance history, he was classically trained in Ballet and Modern Dance.

To Adam, butoh is a means to re-adopt the body and to break out of various limiting habits modern society has thrusted upon our bodies and spirits. The body is an enigma and an entire universe full of wonder, and both surface and shadow are made to eventually dance together in harmony.

Adam’s butoh guiding draws upon a multitude of exercises and perspectives that emphasize the body-mind connection, improvisation, imagination, shamanic motifs, and unlearning. It may be a rich resource for dancers, actors, performance artists, body workers, athletes, psychologists, and more.

Clear instruction is emphasized. The guiding cultivates individual deep creation within and is crafted in such a way that both beginners and experienced practitioners can gain material to construct a personal Butoh body. No experience of any prior discipline needed.
